Fancy colour diamonds

Sell a coloured diamond

Blue, pink, orange, yellow, brown: a coloured diamond is not read like a white one. The hue, its intensity and its natural origin make the value — well before the weight. The house examines and buys them, mounted or loose, by appointment in Paris at 22 rue Drouot or in London at 100 Hatton Garden.

Expertise

Read by intensity and by the certificate

Coloured — “fancy” — diamonds obey a different logic from white diamonds: the intensity and purity of the hue come first. The scale of white diamonds runs from D to Z, from perfectly colourless to light yellow or brown; beyond Z the stone changes world and becomes a coloured diamond. The same carat can thus be worth ten times more, or ten times less, depending on the hue. Three readings make the price: the hue (yellow, pink, blue, green, orange, grey…), its intensity (from “fancy light” to “fancy vivid” and “fancy deep”), and the origin of the colour — natural, or obtained by treatment. Loose or mounted, old or recent: we examine the stone and make a firm offer to buy it.

What we look for

The coloured diamonds we buy

Complimentary first opinion on photographs and papers, firm offer, same-day payment.

Blue diamonds

Coloured by boron, exceedingly rare. A natural blue, even of small weight, belongs among the most sought-after stones on the market. Confusion with a treated diamond or a synthetic requires a laboratory analysis.

Pink diamonds

Among the rarest and most prized. The Argyle mine in Australia, the main source of pinks, closed in November 2020: supply dwindles, demand does not. From pale pink to “fancy vivid”, every nuance counts.

Yellow diamonds (fancy yellow)

Coloured by nitrogen. A light yellow still within the white scale (the so-called “cape” tints) is discounted; beyond Z, from “fancy light” to “fancy vivid”, yellow becomes sought after. Intense and vivid yellows are the most in demand.

Brown, champagne, cognac

The commonest of coloured diamonds, often mounted in jewellery of the 1980s to 2000s. Their value remains below yellows, pinks and blues, but a frank, well-saturated hue or a signed mount changes the reading.

The certificate

The GIA grades the colour (“fancy”, intensity) and secures the value. It also states the origin of the colour — natural or treated — which, for a coloured diamond, weighs as much as the hue itself.

Mounted or loose

We examine the stone alone as well as the jewel. A coloured stone mounted by a great house — Graff, Harry Winston, Cartier — is sold mounted: the signature and the period mount are part of the value. Graff · Harry Winston.

Frequently asked questions

Selling a coloured diamond

How is the value of a coloured diamond determined?

By the hue, its intensity (from “fancy light” to “fancy vivid”), its clarity and its weight, confirmed by the GIA certificate.

Which coloured diamonds are worth the most?

Pinks and blues, by their rarity, reach the highest values; intense yellows are also much sought after.

Is a light yellow diamond a coloured diamond?

Not necessarily. As long as the tint stays within the D–Z scale of white diamonds, it is a tinted white diamond, discounted. It becomes a coloured diamond beyond Z, and its value then follows another logic. We tell you on which side your stone lies.

How do I know whether the colour of a diamond is natural?

By a laboratory analysis: some treatments create or intensify a colour. The certificate states the origin of the colour. Without a certificate, we examine the stone and advise you before any sale.

Does a champagne or cognac diamond have value?

Yes, but less than yellows, pinks and blues: browns are the commonest of coloured diamonds. A frank hue, a good weight or a signed mount raise the estimate markedly.

Is the certificate or the case necessary?

No. They add to the piece but are not essential: we examine on the spot.

Can I sell a coloured diamond in London?

Yes. The house receives in London by appointment at its office, 100 Hatton Garden, EC1N 8NX, in the jewellery quarter. Write first by WhatsApp or e-mail with photographs; the appointment is fixed around the house's visits.

Is payment immediate?

Yes. Once agreement is reached, payment is made the same day, by bank transfer, whatever the amount — with no fees or commission.

Key facts — October 2026

What to know before you come

Verifiable facts, reviewed in October 2026. For a specific case, the appointment settles the matter.

Beyond Z

The D–Z scale of white diamonds stops at light yellow or brown. A stone more coloured than Z is a coloured diamond: the discount of a “cape” yellow then becomes a premium. The certificate decides between the two.

Natural or treated

Irradiation and HPHT treatment can create or alter a colour. Only a laboratory attests the natural origin of the hue, and the difference in value between the two is considerable: never sell without knowing.

Argyle, November 2020

The closure of the Australian Argyle mine dried up the main source of pink diamonds. An older pink stone, mounted or loose, is now read in the light of this new rarity.
